Hadrian’s Wall is Britain’s greatest Roman monument built in AD122. Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Limited (HWHL) was formed to develop the economy of the Hadrian’s Wall Corridor through managing the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall (designated 1987). HWHL is funded by four agencies: One North East, North West Regional Development Agency, English Heritage and Natural England. The formation of HWHL followed on from a twelve month strategic review of the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall.
One of the key aims of Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd is to make Hadrian’s Wall and the corridor a world-class destination – a must-see, must-do place to visit on both domestic and international agendas. This involves changing perceptions of the area and encouraging first time and repeat visitors to take longer holidays, short breaks and day visits.
Upgrading the interpretation, facilities and existing museums along the Wall Corridor, creating the ‘Frontier’ narrative and linking each site to the Frontier concept in a unique way, will achieve increased access.
The aim is for Hadrian’s Wall to become a compelling leading destination for Britain, offering inspirational heritage and spiritually uplifting outdoor educational and tourism based visits creating the twin benefits of jobs and prosperity for local communities.
